KLET  BRDA “PENECA  REBULA” SPARKLING  RIBOLLA GIALLA, PRIMORSKA, SLOVENIA

The Brda in Slovenia is considered the birthplace of the unique rebula/ribolla varietal. Like Italy below it, Slovenia’s vineyards are very fragmented in regards ownership, with thousands of families tending vines as part of a polyculture.  The Klet Brda is a large but high quality minded cooperative that engages directly with growers in all aspects of cultivation.  The modern cellars were designed to receive fruit of many varieties and sources locally, and ferment and age them to retain the individual qualities of their origin.

“Peneca Rebula” is restrained at the onset, then shows green apple and citrus notes with it’s delightfully ticklish bubbles.  This lively, fresh wine is a perfect aperitif or cocktail hour wine!

CERRO  CHAPEU  CHARDONNAY  RESERVA, URUGUAY, 2020

The Cerro Chapeu estate in the Rivera region (on the Uruguay/Brazil border) is over 40 years old and was selected by the Carrau family between 1973 and 1975, when the family sought out new soil sites with increased drainage to ensure quality wine production.  They hand harvest mature chardonnay from these select vineyards and ferment the wine with native yeast in new French oak barrels (60%) and stainless steel tanks (40%) followed by 10 months of contact with the yeast lees.  The wine is bottled with minimal handling to preserve its freshness and complex aromas.

Dr. Konstantin Frank earned his Ph.D. in viticulture from Odessa, Ukraine in 1930 and became a leading expert in his field through eastern Europe.  Having survived two world wars as well as the Russian revolution, Dr. Frank immigrated to New York in 1951 at the age of 52 with empty pockets and no knowledge of English, all in the hope of creating a brighter future for his family.  He fell in love with a special property in the Finger Lakes because of its great wine growing characteristics, namely poor soil and steep slopes.  Dr. Frank successfully planted the first European grape varieties in the eastern United States in 1958.  Four generations along, the Frank family are leaders of winemaking through the Finger Lakes, tending some of the oldest vines in America.

Their gewürztraminer is clean and delicate on the nose, with white flowers, orange zest, and lychee, and a touch of white pepper and ginger.  This off-dry wine is balanced with lively acidity and beautiful flavors of honeysuckle, orange blossom, cardamom, and lychee with a mouth-coating long finish.  It pairs well with Middle Eastern, Moroccan, Thai, and Asian cuisines, as well as with spicy and aromatic ingredients like pepper, ginger, curry, sesame, and soy, as well as with spicy BBQ and wings.

Winery L. A. Cetto began in 1928, when Angelo Cetto, an Italian immigrant (and owner of a wine bar in Tijuana) began making wine from grapes grown by Russian immigrants in Mexico.  In 1951, Angelo’s son, Luis Agustín Cetto, joined the leadership of the winery — and began planting native Italian grapes in the vineyard lands that had been acquired by his father.  Italian engineer (and winemaker), Camillo Magoni, joined the winery team in 1965.  Shortly thereafter, the Cetto family began planting international varietals along with the Italian varietals already growing in their expanding vineyard properties.  In 1981, Luis Alberto Cetto became the third generation of the Cetto family to lead this exciting winery.

L. A. Cetto Zinfandel is an intense, but well balanced wine with aromas of raspberry, blackberry, and black current.
